In this video, Blue Ivy helps me demonstrate how to brush a dog’s teeth. Blue is a great example since she doesn’t get her teeth brushed as often as she should but she is very used to handling. Ideally, you want to keep it short and sweet the first couple of times that your brush your dog’s teeth. The first several times you do this, you aren’t focused on getting the teeth nice and clean, the focus is on creating a positive association with the activity so that your dog willingly wants to participate. This will make it easier to work in sections and get all sides of all teeth easier in the long run.
If you are starting with a puppy, practice regularly putting your fingers in their mouths, touching in between their paw pads, wiping their ears out, etc. so that they are very used to handling. This helps for not only brushing their teeth, but for low stress veterinary visits and medication administration if needed.
They type of toothbrush and toothpaste that you use is all personal preference, (for both you and your dog). I recommend using dental hygiene products that are endorsed by the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC). Here are a list of products that I use (in the video and some additional):
