Raw Diet: Truths & Myths Exposed
With so much information out there about raw diets with staunch conflicting views based seemingly on opinion more often than fact, I wanted to set the record straight for dog owners.
With so much information out there about raw diets with staunch conflicting views based seemingly on opinion more often than fact, I wanted to set the record straight for dog owners. This video is meant to help you filter fact from opinion when deciding what you want to put into your dog’s food bowl.
I am a stickler for accuracy so this video was put together with the help of information provided by nutrition experts, veterinary nutritionists, and Board certified Behavior Consultants including but not limited to Dr. Leslie Hancock-Monroe, Dr. Lore Haug, and Linda Case, (thanks guys!).
What is NOT included in this video is my personal experience treating salmonella cases as an emergency technician. Salmonella is one of the infectious pathogens I mention in the video that is transmissible to humans and dogs. Working for four different veterinary emergency facilities, I’ve seen my fair share of salmonella cases that required typically at least week-long hospitalization in quarantine with personal protective equipment making them expensive to treat. Treatment and hospitalization are stressful for the dogs and every confirmed case of Salmonella that I’ve been a part of treating was from a dog on a raw diet. Salmonella infection can occur from kibble diet and other foods – I have just not ever personally been a part of treating a dog that has acquired a Salmonella infection from anything other than a raw diet.
My opinion: Don’t feed raw just cook it! Many of the raw diets offer a good composition of ingredients but there is no measurable benefit to leaving it in a raw state for consumption. There are too many variables. Consider feeding fresh if you are looking for closest to natural as opposed to processed and food formulated for a long shelf life.
